Veteran event planner Joe Volpe was catering a party for a Philadelphia real estate developer when the host invited Joe to join him in checking out the shuttered Imperial Theater in the city’s emerging Northern Liberties section. Joe and his wife, Andrea, immediately fell in love with the idea of transforming the former movie palace into an upscale wedding venue. With loans from family members and a somewhat apprehensive banker, they proceeded to gut and renovate the space that would become Cescaphe Ballroom.
By May 2003, Cescaphe was working in an office next to a busy construction site. “We were showing carpet and paint samples to brides-to-be and families who were nervous about what we could deliver,” said Volpe. But the Volpe’s sincerity and passion convinced their first clients to believe in them.
On Valentine’s Day 2004, the Cescaphe team hosted its first wedding. They went on to orchestrate 63 more in the first year. As more brides and grooms began referring Cescaphe, and the company’s reputation grew, demand steadily increased. In 2005, the numbers of weddings nearly doubled, to over 100.
By now, Cescaphe was orchestrating over 360 weddings annually. In 2011, the company launched Vie, one of the city’s largest wedding venues, in a prime location just north of City Hall. Expansion continued with the renovation and reopening of the iconic Down Town Club overlooking Independence Hall.
In 2015, Cescaphe acquired the Water Works, a historic landmark on the Schuylkill River, nestled between Boathouse Row and the Art Museum. In 2018, a seventh venue, The Lucy, opened just across from the classic Academy of Music. Creating over 800 weddings a year, Cescaphe is now a national presence.
About Joe Volpe
Cescaphe Founder & CEO Joe Volpe has spent more than 30 years pursuing the singular goal of fulfilling wedding dreams for brides and grooms across Philadelphia. Since founding Cescaphe with wife Andrea in 2003, he has grown the company into one of the most successful wedding brands in the Greater Philadelphia region.
Born in South Philadelphia in 1969, Joe moved to the Wissinoming section of Northeast Philadelphia at the age of four. Like many kids during the 1970s, Joe’s first job came as a paperboy, servicing several blocks near his home.
At 12, Joe got a job at a nearby Jewish delicatessen, working the deli counter and assembling party trays. He was always on time, never called out sick, and did whatever was asked of him to make the demanding clientele happy. During his first summer, he met his future wife, Andrea.
In 1985, the deli owner seized an opportunity to cater events at Colleen’s, an upscale banquet hall, and Joe was promoted to the kitchen crew. As Colleen’s became one of the city’s busiest wedding and event venues, Joe was learning to treat people fairly and to always put the bride and groom first.
In 2002, Joe saw the potential in a forgotten movie theater in the city’s emerging Northern Liberties district and quickly began work transforming it into what would become the glittering Cescaphe Ballroom and the beginning of the Cescaphe wedding brand.
Today, Joe resides in New Jersey with his wife Andrea and their daughters, Francesca and Sophia, whose names they combined to create the company name.
